LaVetCorps

A Partnership for Education

LaVetCorps is a partnership between the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs and AmeriCorps. Louisiana is a national leader in growing this program that serves its student veterans and their families.

In Louisiana, more than 10,700 veterans and their dependents bring in more than $196 million in federal funding to in-state, higher education communities each year through GI Bill® funding.

On-Campus Resources for Student Veterans

Through LaVetCorps, Louisiana’s student veterans and their dependents have direct access to navigators. These LDVA staff members work in the student veteran centers on public and private college and university campuses across the state to help student veterans access the federal and state benefits they have earned through their military service.

Aside from working with student veterans, LDVA navigators also provide training and support to faculty and staff to increase awareness of student veterans’ needs and veteran culture, as well as organize community service projects benefitting both on and off campus veterans.

How We Serve

  • Offer a safe, welcoming space that promotes a sense of community and inclusion on campus for student veterans
  • Encourage veterans to stay in school and graduate
  • Provide opportunities for student veterans to engage in community service projects that will positively impact the military community
  • Serve as a direct point of contact for faculty/staff with the student veteran community on campus through outreach and training
  • Promote suicide prevention among student veterans through ongoing outreach and community engagement
  • Promote a military-friendly atmosphere by positively engaging the campus and the surrounding community in student veteran activities
  • Refer student veterans to Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs’ services
  • Connect student veterans with local, military service-related and community/civic organizations
