The cemetery opened in June of 2014 and has quickly become the fastest growing state veteran cemetery in Louisiana. As initial burial sites are occupied, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration provides grants to add additional burial space to meet the goal of keeping all burial options available.
When you visit the cemetery, you will see our Carillon Bell Tower which was donated by AMVETS when the cemetery first opened. The bell tower is located in Memorial Circle where we have a wall to honor the groups who donate their time and attention to our cemetery. There is also a brick walkway through a garden with names engraved through donations received by Hero’s Farewell. In
addition, we have a very peaceful fountain located near the committal shelter donated by the Knights of Columbus. We are very blessed to have some of the best veteran organizations to partner with us to make this cemetery an honorable final resting place for our local heroes.
The staff at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery is here to help veteran families at their time of need. Please contact us by email at slvc@la.gov at any time or by phone at (985) 646-6458 Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm excluding holidays.
If your loved one is buried at any veteran cemetery you can leave a tribute at Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM)
“My wife and I had looked at the pictures of Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery available online. It seemed nice, but sometimes looking at pictures is just not enough. So, yesterday we decided it was the right time to do friendly reconnaissance and start looking for a place to land. (That’s probably my USAF training kicking in, right?) As we walked-in-hand, we read many of the headstone markers aloud. One side would have the vet’s name, rank, branch of service, dates, and a short epitaph. The opposite side of the headstone was available for your spouse. What an honor. It felt like being among friends. Maybe an odd thing to say, but knowing that everyone there made some degree of sacrifice for our country made you proud and unified with them. The peacefulness of that experience was so strong. The tall trees, ozone, openness, simplicity, and cleanliness of the grounds left my wife and I reassured that “this was it”. Not in a hurry to move…. but just knowing we have found our final landing place made the trip across Lake Pontchartrain so worth it! We plan on being back. Thank you to all that have worked so hard to help make this place so nice. Well done.” ~Google Review
While our office is closed on Veterans Day to allow our employees to celebrate with family and friends, the cemetery is open for visiting the graves of loved ones from sunrise to sunset. Thank you to our service members, past and present for your service. Have a safe and blessed Veterans Day.
Each year we host an event to Remember the Fallen, Honor those who served, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom. The only way we can continue to supply enough wreaths for every grave is for people like you to donate.
