BATON ROUGE – Today, the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs (LDVA) will begin the process of hiring 30 new LaVetCorps Navigators who in August 2019 will start working on campuses across the state.
The LaVetCorps mission is to empower veterans, families, and campus communities to help veterans returning from active duty military service to successfully transition home to college and their local community.
“We are proud of LDVA’s LaVetCorps program and are looking forward to identifying and hiring some talented men and women who have a passion for working with veterans and their families to work in these new service-oriented positions,” said LDVA Secretary Joey Strickland.
When student veterans on campus have questions or concerns, the LaVetCorps Navigator is there to assist these veterans in identifying and accessing necessary services and lend a supportive ear – all within a dedicated veteran center that will provide a welcoming place to meet up with other veterans on campus.
Thirty (30) LaVetCorps-staffed veteran resource centers will open this fall on Louisiana college campuses. At each of these veteran centers, an LDVA-trained LaVetCorps Navigator will serve as a peer mentor to student veterans in transition, work to help student veterans access their earned federal and state benefits, and help to build a vibrant on-campus veteran community.
LDVA LaVetCorps navigators will also provide training and support to college faculty, staff and administration to increase awareness of student veterans’ needs and veteran culture, and organize community service projects benefiting both on- and off-campus veterans. In these service projects, veterans will have the opportunity to serve alongside other veterans and civilians to be of service in their communities.
More than 840 LDVA employees across the state devote each day to providing comprehensive care and quality service to Louisiana’s 284,000 veterans and their families with regard to education, benefits, healthcare, long-term care, and burial honors. Now, through LaVetCorps, Louisiana’s student veterans and their dependents will have direct access to these services on campuses as well.
Navigators should be excellent communicators with a passion for service and a sincere desire to be of service to the veteran student community. They should possess unique knowledge of military culture and be able to relate to veterans one-on-one on a personal level.
Each LaVetCorps Navigator position is a ten-month contract that runs from August 2019 to May 2020, earning a stipend (living allowance) of $10,494 total to be paid in equal increments. You can download a recruiting flier here: LaVetCorps Navigator Flier.
